Spelling

Beginning in January, I will send home spelling words for your child to study.  These will come home in the Friday Folders and we will have our tests on Tuesdays.  These are simple sight words or words that sound out.  The reason I do this is to prepare them for First Grade.  These tests are not counted for a grade.

Sight Words

Sight words are words that appear frequently in texts and often do not sound out.  They are sometimes known as high-frequency words or popcorn words (since they "pop" up in our reading).  We will work on these in class and I will send home sight word cards for your child to learn.  Once they feel they know the words, please have your child bring them back to class and I will have them read them to me.  If they know the words, they will receive a reward and I will give them more sight words.  Knowing these words will help your child become a more confident reader!

Homework

In Kindergarten, reading with/to your child each night is probably the most important thing you can do to help your child be successful.  Since early learners tend to enjoy doing homework, I send home a couple of homework sheets each Friday in their Friday Folders.  The homework should be something your child is able to do with minimal help. Children, at this age, love lots of praise!  Please have your child return the homework the following week.  The homework is not counted for a grade, however, I have a reward system in place for homework.
